Terra Africa

(6 rooms) 6 Kenneth McArthur St, Olympia, PO Box 97164, Windhoek; tel: 061 252100, 081 249 2520; fax: 061 252020; email: terra@africaonline.co.na
Dutch husband-and-wife team Liesbeth and Sebastian van der Schoof have set out to create something different in guesthouse accommodation. Opened in May 2001, Terra Africa is set in a residential road behind a gate adorned with bougainvillaea. The rather utilitarian square building belies the care that is being lavished on the modern interior. Stone-flagged floors lead into a spacious lounge with dining area for breakfast and dinner, and big picture windows overlooking tree-shaded gardens with a small pool and courtyard area.

Each of the four carpeted twin rooms has en-suite bath or shower and is themed to a relevant design – Morocco is complete, while others, including Bushman, are well in hand. Two self-catering rooms also have a sink/hotplate, and the larger of these has a couch and business area as well. Be careful when you're booking: although most of the rooms overlook the hills, those upstairs (both self catering) are not cushioned from traffic noise on Robert Mugabe Av.

Dinner is available on request, both for guests and non-residents, and is cooked by master chef Sebastian himself. There are ambitious plans to build a further four rooms and to landscape the garden; this is one to watch.
