Where to eat and drink in Zanzibar Town

This section lists restaurants, cafés, snack bars, eating-houses and all other places that serve primarily food – or food and drink in equal measures. Bars, and other places which serve primarily drinks, are listed along with music venues in the Bars, clubs and entertainment section.

Some restaurants and cafés in Zanzibar Town are simple and aimed at locals. Others are smarter and cater specifically for tourists, expatriates and more well-off residents. The following list, arranged very loosely into categories of quality and price, cannot hope to be complete, but it indicates the type and range of places available. Nearly all those included are open in the evenings for dinner, and most also open for lunch; some are open all day. At busy times reservations may be necessary in some of the smarter restaurants.

We have divided the various options into the following catagories:

Top end (average main course US$10 upwards)

Mid range (average main course US$5–8)

Budget (average main course less than US$5)

Hotel restaurants & Local restaurants

Cheap Eats
