All the places listed in this chapter lie within about 20km of Zanzibar Town, and most can be reached from there easily (or at least without too much difficulty) as a day trip, whether by hired scooter, hired bike, or a combination of foot and public transport. If you prefer not to travel independently, visits to any of the places mentioned here can also be arranged with a tour company, often as part of a spice tour.

Of the places described, Mbweni lies south of Zanzibar Town, whilst the palaces of Maruhubi and Mtoni, and the Persian Baths of Kidichi and Kizimbani, lie to the north. Some of the palaces and bath-houses mentioned in this section are included in the spice tours arranged by tour companies and independent guides.

South Of Zanzibar Town

The main attraction here is the Mbweni area, which lies around 3 kms from the town centre.

North of Zanzibar Town

In a 5 km coastal stretch north from Zanzibar Town, there are several palaces dating from the 19th century built for the various sultans who ruled Zanzibar during this period.

Islands near Zanzibar Town

A few kilometres from Zanzibar Town are several small islands, some of which are good destinations for a relaxing day's outing.
