Jongomero Tented Camp

8 tents) 022 2128485; 0748 953551; 022 211 2794; info@selous.com; www.selous.com.

Sister-camp of Selous Safari Camp in the Selous, this is the most overtly luxurious of the lodges in Ruaha, and the only one with a swimming pool. Jongomero consists of 8 spacious tented rooms with private balconies carved into the dense riverine woodland bordering the eponymous seasonal river. It's about 500m upstream of its confluence with the Ruaha, where a semi-permanent pool hosts a resident pod of around 50 hippos. Jongomero has a very isolated feel, situated 60km southwest of the entrance gate, and the little-used road running back towards the entrance gate often yields good elephant and buffalo sightings. The area to the south of camp functions much as a private game reserve, because so few other vehicles head this way, but this area borders a hunting concession and so the wildlife tends to be rather skittish. The birdlife within camp can be excellent, with Livingstone's turaco topping the gaudiness stakes, while the localised Bohm's spinetail can be distinguished from the other swifts and swallows that soar above the camp by its distinctive bat-like fluttering. The catering is to an exceptionally high standard, but, unlike several other lodges in this price range elsewhere in Tanzania, drinks are not included.

US$495/660 sgl/dbl inc all activities and meals.
