Mwagusi Safari Camp

(10 tents) (UK) 20 8846 9363; e tropicalafrica.uk@virgin.net.

This small and exclusive tented camp, situated on the north bank of the seasonal Mwagusi River, is one of the most alluring lodges anywhere in east Africa, immensely comfortable, yet with a real bush atmosphere. The accommodation, strung along the riparian woodland fringing the river, consists of spacious walk-in tents, enclosed in a wood, thatch and reed shelter, each of which has a vast shower
and toilet area, and a private balcony. Because the lodge is owner managed, the service is top-notch, and includes some great touches – most memorably, starlit bush dinners around a campfire in a clearing above the camp or in the riverbed.

Game viewing from the camp is superb, with elephant and greater kudu regularly putting in an appearance, and plenty of birds hopping around the trees. Wild dog are regularly sighted in the area, several lion prides are resident, and the closest game-viewing circuits are situated far enough from the larger Ruaha River Lodge and park headquarters to let you feel you have the whole park to yourself. Game walks with an armed ranger are also offered, with a good chance of encountering elephants and other large animals on foot.

US$390/450 sgl/dbl inc all activities, meals and park fees; drinks are extra, and there is a charge of US$25 pp for an extra earlymorning walk.
