Mailika Bungalows in Kendwa

5 rooms) e khalfanpenot@hotmail.com.

Although it officially opened in 2002, Malaika, meaning 'angel' in Swahili, has only recently been fully operational. Owned and managed by Mr Khalfani, who goes by the nickname 'Alfonso' and appears to be something of a wheelerdealer on Kendwa Beach, there are currently 5 Spartan bungalows with plans to build 2 more and a restaurant on the beach in 2006.

The rooms are basic but light and airy; concrete floors, 2-tone baby-pink painted walls with matching curtains and a dbl bed with mosquito net. All the rooms are ensuite with European flush toilets and cold water showers. There is no fan or AC, but the windows are only mesh and burglar bars so allow a cooling breeze into the rooms. Like many budget places, the electricity, we're informed, 'is coming' but this may still be the case for some considerable time. UUS$15 pp, b&b.
