Selous Safari Camp

(13 rooms) 022 212 8485; 0748 953551; 022 211 2794;

This plush camp is set back slightly from the shores of Lake Siwando. Approaching across the lake, all you see of the camp over the treetops are the tall apexes of the main bandas, which have been built on stilts. The camp has recently been divided into a main camp with 9 rooms, known as 'Selous Safari Camp', and a smaller section with just 4 rooms called 'Selous Private Camp'. Both provide accommodation in spacious stilted en-suite tents, which are set far apart from each other and have fans, open-air showers and a private deck.

The main camp's lounge and dining area is a fabulous stilted treehouse lit at night by dozens of gas lamps. The main camp has a separate swimming pool. The private camp's tents are rather larger than those at the main camp, and more luxuriously appointed, and these have their own dining area on decking near the swimming pool. Game drives, boat trips, guided walks and flycamping are all offered here – although the camp is geared more for driving and boating than it is for walking. When last visited, activities commenced quite late in the morning, at 09.00; perfect for honeymooners who want a long lie-in and a safari. More recently we understand that they're starting these earlier, if requested. In short, Selous Safari Camp is a very high-quality, professional operation that pays great attention to detail – especially where comfort and food are concerned.

US$525/700 sgl/dbl for the main camp (US$600/800 for the private camp) inc FB and 2 activities daily; excludes park fees. Drinks are usually included at the private camp; they are charged as an extra at the main camp.
